THE SNOW IS FALLING IN NEW ZEALAND

Not too long before the course begins in New Zealand and a great early snowfall is setting the start up nicely, with 40cm over the past 24 hours!

Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager Hamish McCrostie says “We’ve received 40cm of snow over the past 24 hours and it’s still snowing lightly. We’re all getting pretty excited about opening day and the big reveal of our fantastic new base building and deck,”

Our trainees in Whistler have just completed their course and we had 100% pass rate for the skiers who are now qualified as ski instructors. Several of them have already been offered jobs and have donned the jackets of the local ski school.

Whistler's record snowfall: After a wet Christmas and New Year many people were wondering about Whistler's snow. However, it has been announced that the record for the snowiest month Whistler & Blackcomb have seen since weather data collection began 25 years ago has been broken. January 2006's total snowfall was 469 cm (15.6 feet). Needless to say, UK trainees on Peak Leaders ski and snowboard instructor course in Whistler right now, are delighted!

Gap year & career bereak courses happening now Peak Leaders ski and snowboard instructor courses for 2006 kicked off in Canada on 6th January. The weekly diary for Banff and Whistler gives a blogger's eye view of what is going on.

Summer 06 Courses - With the winter ski and snowboard instructor courses in North America and Europe well under way, Peak Leaders are now preparing their southern hemisphere courses (Jul - Sep 06). AUSTRALIA MODULE -
gap year New Zealand & Australia
After you have trained to be a ski or snowboard instructor in New Zealand you can go to Australia and do something entirely different for two weeks. The module will entail diving off the Great Barrier Reef, trekking the Australian outback, learning a bit about the ecology of the Coral Sea and conservation of the oldest tropical rainforest in the world.

Working in Zermatt

Since qualifying in Argentina in my gap year, I've had a really good season working in Zermatt and my skiing and teaching came on loads. I also sat quite a few exams and am now very close to achieving the BASI ski teacher award (ISIA), formerly known as grade 2. I passed the Mountain Safety, Teacher Technical, Teacher Teaching and Second discipline exams and have completed my 200 hours of teaching. Now I only need to do the Common Theory (an attendance course that I am doing in June) and the APC (a race coaching course that might be on in July on a glacier in Europe) to achieve the ISIA level. I look forward to hearing from you and hope that everything is looking good for Argentina 2006! Myles Bax
