Joe Hobson spent the early part of his career working for some of the UK’s best surf schools. He has also worked for some of Europe’s leading surf magazines and surf camps. He ended up in a career that allows him to do both and surf in some of the worlds best waves in a number of countries around the world. For Joe surf instructing and lifeguarding started as a great way to earn money in between studies, but soon turned into an exciting and rewarding career. Joe considers surf coaching his profession and his passion for introducing people to surfing shows in every lesson. He will help train all course participants and is one of the surf instructors participants work with teaching people to surf in a fun and professional way throughout their course. A qualified beach lifeguard, BSA level 2 surf instructor and currently undergoing training to become an ISA surf judge and BSA Trainer Assessor. Joe works closely with the British Surfing Association and has spent the last 5 years working as a surf instructor in the UK, France and Morocco whilst at the same time as surfing some of the worlds best waves.
Our beach house in Moilets is within walking distance to the beach and also boasts its own swimming pool and private garden. Perfect for those lazy evenings after a hard day in the surf! It’s mostly twin rooms with shared bathrooms and an open plan communal living area. Centrally located to all the towns vibrant bars and resturaunts and only a stones throw away from the local golf course.

Breakfast and evening meals are included 5 days per week, so on the days that you are being coached, you don’t have the stress of trying to hit the supermarket before it closes. Think continental buffet breakfasts and BBQs, fish, salads and local dishes in the evening. Our food is delicious, nutritious and there’s plenty of it.
Bikes, exercise equipment and yoga mats are provided and free to use, also a DVD player with a large selection of the most recent surf movies is provided for those quiet nights in.

The days are spent surfing the world class and varied waves of Moliets Plage which is one of the few spots in France that offers waves at both high and low tide as well as a series of different banks and setups including; a popular river mouth, a heavy shore break for advanced surfers and a low tide long peeling wave suited for beginners/ intermediates.
The endless coast line with sand bottom waves provide a varied, safe yet progressive learning environment. The location of the town means that you can easily access other surf spots at the weekend. And during the summer perfect groundswells kick in on a regular basis, the days are still long and the water temperature is at its warmest. It’s no wonder that the 7th stop on the ASP pro circuit is the held in the South West of France, mainly Hossegor, which is only 30 minutes away. So staying with us at Moliets is a great and affordable way to check out the best surfers in the world prepare and compete on some of Europe’s best waves.

Your coaches Pablo and Joe will organise optional trips at the weekend to the best local secret spots. San Sebastian is only a couple of hours away – tapas heaven and a wicked night out. Hossegor is only a stone’s throw. Through Star Surf Camps you will have access to one of the official test centers in Europe for Aviso Surfboards. These are hi-tech top of the range surfboards fully constructed with carbon Fibre, making Lewis Hamilton’s formula 1 car look outdated, and they retail at nothing less than £1000 per board. We will be arranging a demo session for you guys where we get the Aviso pro team down to demonstrate the boards, tell you all about them and even let you all try out a range of the boards for a session! We also have some new HD go pro water cameras (surf board mountable) which you can all use and this combined with the close to shore breaking yet powerful waves of the south west of France provides the perfect opportunities to capture some great waves on camera.
We will be able to offer a number of full time surf instructor positions following the course. You’ll also receive a presentation from Pablo and Joe telling you about the best ways into the industry, finding a job and be able to utilise their endless network of surf school contacts worldwide. Nice!
The program is designed around you attaining your BSA Surf Instructor Level 1 award and your RLSS Beach Lifeguard, internationally recognised qualifications allowing you to work as both a surf instructor and beach lifeguard.
These qualifications last 3 years, however if you can prove you have worked throughout these 3 years you would only need to sit a short refresher course to maintain your qualifications for a further 3 years. All training and assessments are included in the 8 week instructor course, and the 4 week fast track program.

You’ll receive a minimum of 4 hours coaching per day 5 days per week. The course will focus on improving your personal performance in the water, as well as learning how to plan, deliver and review coaching sessions. Most of the initial training will be done in the Moilets area to allow you to become familiar, comfortable and confident within the area that you will eventually take your exams. The course focuses on ocean knowledge, surf fitness and of course coaching and surfing skills.

A typical afternoon will include video analysis and feedback, including theory sessions, fitness sessions or simply another surf. Part of your qualification requires you to undergo 20 hours shadowing, which we include. You’ll be given a log book to fill in and keep track of this to eventually hand in at the end of the course. This logbook is essential to prove you have undergone the required shadowing hours to the BSA and shall be signed of by your course assessors. Your shadowing hours also will form part of your training allowing you to gain practical and theoretical experience in a real working environment.
